What I do
-
There’s a certain thrill to launching a survey and watching the number of responses grow — an anticipation for the discoveries data analysis will bring. I can help you find the answers to your research questions.
-
Finding the answers requires first asking the right questions. There may be no stupid questions but there are a lot of poorly worded ones. I use expert review and cognitive pretesting to achieve high reliability and validity of results, so there’s no question of what responses mean.
-
Rare groups comprise less than 10% of a total population (Kalton & Anderson 1986) but groups don’t have to be rare to provide special challenges to tight time/ resource budgets. My experience ranges from policymakers to children to refugees, and everyone in between.
-
Interviewer training isn’t simply about the peculiarities of a software or questionnaire, it’s about preparing interviewers for the stories behind the data. From distress protocols to disposition codes, my experience with general and special population surveys will prepare your team for success.
-
Need to measure something but aren’t sure what or how? I can help conceptualise and operationalise indicators and metrics for both cross-sectional and longitudinal data collection.
-
In-depth interviews (IDIs) provide a wealth of information, either as a stand-alone data source or as part of a mixed methods study. I am practiced at both in-person and remote IDIs, to flexibly meet all project needs.
-
Humanitarian crises require rapid and flexible responses, complicating efforts to conduct rigorous, high quality assessments. I apply innovative, mixed methods approaches to identify effects — intended and otherwise — and measure outcomes.
-
I can provide project-tailored training for CAPI/ CATI field interviewing, cognitive interviewing, and in-depth interviewing. I also provide workshops on data collection for human rights and project evaluation, managing interviewers conducting sensitive research, and surveying demographic subgroups.
-
Got a survey that’s not up to snuff? Just like Hollywood has script doctors, I provide expert reviews and revisions, and — depending on project needs — cognitive and usability testing, as well as small pilot studies.
-
From cross-cultural comparability to motivated non response to social media sampling, I read the literature so you don’t have to. I consult across the full range of survey methods, with specialisation in sensitive research and vulnerable groups. The bigger the challenge, the better!
-
Know you need an ethics review but don’t know where to start? I’ve worked with university and independent ethics review boards for data collection in both Europe and the US.
